Shannen completed her undergrad at UC Berkeley majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology, with an emphasis on Cell and Developmental Biology.  Shannen volunteered in the Fischer Lab during her Sophomore and Senior years, working with Jenny to investigate the outcome of a gain or loss of the VIM5 gene, an endosperm-specific gene in Arabidopsis thaliana, proposed to be required for maintenance DNA methylation. Once she had graduated, Shannen wished to study Medicine and was successful, winning a place at the Medical School at the University of Hong Kong.

If she is to be be reincarnated as a plant, she wishes to be a lotus flower because it always stands out so pretty and pure against its muddy surroundings
